What is it about an old house that attracts our reflection?

“This Ole House” by Stuart Hamblen, and published in 1954.

This ole house once knew his children
This ole house once knew his wife
This ole house was home and comfort
As they fought the storms of life
This old house once rang with laughter
This old house heard many shouts
Now he trembles in the darkness
When the lightnin’ walks about

CHORUS:
Ain’t a-gonna need this house no longer
Ain’t a-gonna need this house no more
Ain’t got time to fix the shingles
Ain’t got time to fix the floor
Ain’t got time to oil the hinges
Nor to mend the windowpane
Ain’t a-gonna need this house no longer
He’s a-gettin’ ready to meet the saints

The First Snow

"The First Snow" oil on panel 48x25"

As the gravel road leaves Highway 61 heading over the creeks and through the woods to grandmama’s house almost three miles up the hill and around the curves, on this first snowy October day I was struck by a painting impatient to be accomplished, the Paynes gray tire tracks, the same color sky tinted with titanium white, but still darker than the fresh, bright, zink-white snow contrasting starkly against the Prussian blue mixed with a touch of Viridian spruce trees and the rumpled and swirled yellow-ochre grass, and at last the grand finale: a Diamond Willow Tree whose wet branches looked cadmium orange straight from the tube.  All of these elements conspired together and cried out,  “This moment wishes to be captured”.

If you enter the boundary waters through the Pine Lake entrance, paddle west 7 miles all the way to the other end of the lake. Look for a trail in the brush a little south of the only creek there. Leave your canoe and hike the trail about a half mile and you will find this idyllic falls.

Above are examples of the pastel sketch and the finished oil of this secluded beautiful falls called “Johnson Falls.”

This tractor was freshly retired and left to rust in the last field it had cleared, when we moved here to northern Minnesota a little more than twenty-five years ago. It rests a couple of miles from the road and our homestead.  I frequently ride a horse or ski past it. The field it cleared is nearly grown up again, while the old caterpillar slowly disintegrates.
